Kodiak Remembers Exxon: Journal 1
The readings were really interesting, to say the least. I think one of the lawyers that represented Kodiak, Matt Jamin, was actually my neighbor. Skype interview? It's a possibility. Also, the chronology of the event really put the event into perspective, like who was ready to help, how fast we could be prepared and how prepared we really were. Additionally, Toby's article was very informative and slightly entertaining. It portrayed the choice between staying honest and going hungry and all the tricks in-between. For example, the cool Skipper, that let them have supplies after the Veco rep passed out, that was cool. Also, the set netter liaison's words of friendly advice was...informative to say the least. Another thing that interested me today, was the Toby's story of the people of Kodiak and their protest against Exxon. In my opinion, they won. I never really knew that there had been any real protests, I thought those happened other places besides our quaint little town of Kodiak.

Yeah, I completely agree with you Rj. I think we could have done much more done if we just got up on our feet and immediately tried to stop the spill but they waited hours for the Exxon Valdez to spill its distilled dinosaur blood into the water. I was also surprised that people who weren't fisherman also wanted to help out. I mean, some people weren't even related to the ocean in anyway with their jobs. They all decided to help though and that was what surprised me. There are still great people in the world ready to help always.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you put you opinion, and your feelings. I wondered why the others just just didn't help out as much as the others.
ReplyDeleteRJ, it seems that you caught the essence of the Toby reading: "It portrayed the choice between staying honest and going hungry and all the tricks in-between" - what an ethical dilemma for fisherman! I appreciate that you don't have a judgmental tone, and seem to understand that it's a complicated issue. Matt Jamin would be a great person to interview, especially for Emma who is doing the legal implications of the spill. I'm so glad that you're in this class, and can't wait for you to be back on Monday!
